West Coast leaders refuse to accept SNA report

The new SNA map captures 95 per cent of all private land on the West Coast, according to Westland Mayor Bruce Smith.
It also includes DOC stewardship land, which will skew the independent evaluation of that land that s supposed to be getting under way,
Smith told the meeting. We are now up to 91.5 per cent of Westland controlled by DOC or other protection . we should not receive this report - it takes away property rights without consent.

This ruling affirms Paparoa as a quiet national park and it s one of the best things to happen for recreation and conservation on the Coast in 10 years, Morfett said.
DOC s management plan for Paparoa was rushed through in the wake of the Pike River mine disaster and ignored the CMS, which had a higher status, he said. ....

The killer in our backyard: The deadly beauty of Taranaki Maunga

Summer is the easiest time to summit due to limited ice and snow at the peak, says former police officer and alpine rescuer George White says.

But in the Autumn the mountain is a death trap for inexperienced climbers, he says.
“The maunga can bite, and he bites hard.”
The 58-year-old New Plymouth man has been involved in countless rescues and body recoveries from the maunga in his time and knows its many moods.
The first recorded fatality was in autumn 1891, when 23-year-old William Southward slipped on frozen ice and fell to his death. ....
