While we don’t know if this year’s polar vortex will send us a record-setting winter, even a brief cold snap can tax our furnaces and boilers. Energy usage increases significantly during these spells. Whether you heat by natural gas, oil, wood, propane or electricity, everyone is impacted by subfreezing weather.
Typically, a Unitil customer’s monthly electric usage is about 600 kWh when averaged over 12 months. For a residential customer using natural gas, the monthly winter average is about 125 therms. However, even if you keep your thermostat at the same temperature, you may use substantially more energy during a cold snap as your furnace works that much harder to maintain internal temperatures. ....
