Bar Council lauds virtual criminal appeal hearing system


PETALING JAYA: The virtual criminal appeal hearing launched on March 1 is an effective way to dispose of urgent criminal cases in a safe and speedy manner, says Bar Council president Salim Bashir.
He said there had been instances in the past where hearings were postponed at the Court of Appeal or Federal Court due to various factors caused by Covid-19, which included infections in prisons and travel restrictions due to the movement control order.
“The virtual criminal appeal hearing system will allow cases with specific urgency to be heard.
“It is an effective way to dispose of cases in a safe and speedy manner without compromising criminal justice, ” he said. ....

Transparent barriers for Klang Valley courts

KUALA LUMPUR: As part of efforts to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus, transparent barriers will be put up in Klang Valley courts in stages, starting April 1.
The Federal Court Chief Registrar’s Office (PKPMP) in Putrajaya said barriers would be installed at the counsel’s table, witness box, the dock in the courtrooms and remand rooms.
The judiciary started the transparent barrier pilot project at the Sepang Sessions and Magistrate’s courts early this month.
“The initiative to install barriers is in line with the judiciary’s efforts to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in court premises and ensure justice services and delivery can run safely, orderly and smoothly, ” it said. ....

Kuala Lumpur: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s bid to disqualify Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram as prosecutor in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) audit tampering case trial will be heard today (Wednesday) at the High Court as scheduled.
On Jan 12, the Federal Court Chief Registrar’s Office in a statement said that all hearings of criminal cases in open court initially scheduled for Jan 13 until Jan 26 were postponed following re-implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) to curb the spread of Covid-19. ....
