"All my life has been swept under the carpet" - survivor

A man who suffered abuse while in care says he wants transformative change in the state care system in New Zealand.

Billy Puka Tanu, 50, is a Tokelauan/Māori from Wellington who was motivated to share his story so that the abuse he endured does not happen to anyone else.
In Tanu s written statement he said that his earliest childhood memory was looking up at his dad and seeing him beat up his mum. I must have being five or six years old. ....

His aunt then called the police, and “I was taken to the police station and locked in a cell overnight”.
On another occasion, he was kidnapped by a neighbour and raped, he said. He ran away again that night.
“What gets me is that nobody ever asked me why I kept running away, no social worker, no one.”
Eventually X was put in Owairaka Boys Home in Auckland, which he referred to as a prison.
He was forced to clean the toilets with a toothbrush, which he then had to use to brush his teeth. ....

A group representing some survivors of abuse claims the estimated number of people abused while in care is well off the mark.
Survivors need to see action before they truly trust the Royal Commission, one of their representatives says.

It says of the 655,000 young people in care between 1950 and 2019 nearly 40 percent were abused, about a quarter of a million young people.
The Royal Commission said the true figure of historical abuse in care would never be known because of large gaps and deficiencies in the data collected at the time - and the 250,000 figure may be conservative.
The Network of Survivors of Abuse in faith based care is putting the number close to 400,000. ....
