Their cities may share a river, but the mayors of Ottawa and Gatineau, Que., had very different reactions to the federal budget s update on two new ways to cross it.
Monday s budget calls for the creation of two new offices, one to study and plan a proposed tramway loop connecting Ottawa and Gatineau, and another to address the question of an additional bridge across the Ottawa River. ....

McKenna backs NCC's increased involvement in capital transit planning

Article content
Catherine McKenna, the city’s senior federal cabinet minister, likes to see the National Capital Commission taking a bigger role in planning transportation, including public transit, despite a criticism from Ottawa’s mayor that the agency is needlessly dipping into municipal matters.
“The reality is the NCC plays an important role. We have to think about this area as not Ottawa and Gatineau, but as one region,” McKenna said in an interview Wednesday, two days after the federal budget announced more transportation responsibilities for the NCC.

NCC board approves development concept for LeBreton Flats

Article content
The National Capital Commission board of directors on Thursday approved the final concept plan for LeBreton Flats and learned the identities of three development teams competing to build the first part of the modern-day redevelopment of the key federal site.
The concept plan sets the development areas and parkland that will be established over 35 years on the 29-hectare land. The mixed-use plan estimates about 7,500 people will live in homes at the redeveloped LeBreton Flats at full build-out, with 12.5 hectares of land dedicated to park space. Twenty-five per cent of homes will be considered affordable.

Council can do more to protect the Ottawa River from radioactive leaks

Article content
Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) is planning a radioactive waste landfill and a nuclear reactor disposal facility near the Ottawa River, upstream from Ottawa and many other communities.
CNL claims these plans would be an improvement over the status quo. How credible is that claim? While a landfill might help in the short term, exposing wastes to extreme weather events is risky. In the longer term, CNL’s own reports suggest that our descendants could be living downstream from a leaking and disintegrating pile.
