THE SAA Pilots’ Association (SAAPA) said it respected the labour court’s decision to postpone its hearing until June 15.
This comes after SAAPA launched an urgent application with the court to declare the SAAPA lockout unprotected or unlawful.
Speaking to BRO, SAAPA chairperson Captain Grant Back said: “While we would have preferred that the matter be adjudicated on yesterday, we look forward to the next hearing and remain confident that we have a sound case in all aspects.”
SAA argued that the matter was not urgent and should be heard at this time, denying that the lockout was unprotected. The court did not rule whether the matter was urgent or not. ....

THE battle between the SAA Pilots’ Association (SAAPA) and the government continues, as the pilots will on Thursday apply for an urgent interdict to have the airline’s use of “scab” labour during their dispute with the carrier declared illegal.
SAAPA members started the strike to prevent the airline from lifting the lockout for certain pilots, especially training pilots who are needed to get the airline running again.
SAAPA said in a statement on Wednesday said that it would further argue that the current lockout should be declared unlawful. ....

An SAA flight meant to collect coronavirus vaccines in Brussels was prevented from taking off this week.
The SA Civil Aviation Authority noted compliance issues relating to the correct certification of a non-SAA pilot training facility.
The first batch of Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccines arrived via a TUI airlines aircraft at OR Tambo International Airport late on Tuesday night.
A South African Airways (SAA) plane that was supposed to fetch vaccines for SA in Brussels, Belgium, was prevented from departing earlier this week due to not being compliant with civil aviation regulations at the time, according to Captain Grant Back, chairperson of the SAA Pilots Association (SAAPA). ....

Don't blame us for bad management, SAA pilots tell government

Gallo Images/Jacques Stander
The SAA Pilots Association says government should focus on mismanagement at the airline and not blame it for past ills.
It was due to legal action by the association, for instance, that former SAA chair Dudu Myeni was declared a delinquent director.
SAAPA believes by criticising them, the DPE and rescue practitioners want to take attention away from not dealing with the real causes of the airline s demise.
Rather than blaming the pilots at South African Airways (SAA) for the financial troubles of the state-owned airline and the lack of aviation transformation, the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) - SAA s shareholder - and the business rescue practitioners should focus on mismanagement at the airline and its subsidiary SAA Technical in the past. ....
