Last night’s Yucca Valley Town Council meeting was host to a variety of topics, ranging from community presentations to the ratification of an opposition letter for the relocation of a sexually violent predator into the Twentynine Palms area. Reporter Joshua King has more details… The Yucca Valley Town Council met last night to discuss many important matters, but first turned over the podium to Joshua Tree National Park Superintendent David Smith for an update on the park. In his presentation, Smith discussed the original closure of the park last year, the high numbers of tourists coming through the park, totaling roughly 3 million visitors this last year, and the upcoming Black Rock Rehabilitation Project. ....
A court martial will be held today (March 8) for at least one service member who was charged in a shooting on board the Combat Center that killed a Navy corpsman about 18 months ago. HM3 Michael DeLeon, 30, was shot and killed during a house party on the base August 16, 2019. Z107.7 News has learned that DeLeon was partying and drinking with at least four other corpsmen HM3 Mason Williams, 23, HM2 Sterling Wold, 28, HM2 Jesse Humes, 27, and HM1 Ryan Dini, 37. During the party, a gun was brought out and fired, killing DeLeon. DeLeon’s family said they were initially told it was suicide; months later they learned DeLeon had been shot by another corpsman. HM2 Sterling Wold and HM2 Jesse Humes have been charged with dereliction of duty; they are expected to plead guilty at a summary court martial today. HM3 Mason Williams is charged with reckless endangerment, violation of a lawful general order, dereliction of duty, drunk and disorderly conduct, and making a false official statemen ....
The Morongo Basin Sheriff’s station captain, and chief of police for Yucca Valley and Twentynine Palms, was the guest on the Z107.7 Up Close show Friday (February 26). Reporter Andrew Dieleman says that Captain Luke Niles also addressed the recent proliferation of illegal marijuana grows in the Morongo Basin and what the Sheriff’s department is doing about it… According to Sheriff’s Captain Luke Niles, the Morongo Basin has seen a significant increase in illegal marijuana grows because the area provides much of what illegal growers are looking for. “Land out here is cheap and it’s relatively secluded.” ....
