In this Q&A interview, FAO Senior Desert Locust Forecaster Keith Cressman and Cyril Ferrand, Manager of FAO’s Desert Locust response in East Africa, discuss progress made in containing the threat posed by the voracious pest in East Africa.
What is the locust situation in East Africa right now?
Cressman: At the moment, swarms are declining rapidly across the Horn of Africa thanks to the large-scale control operations mounted by governments and supported by FAO over the past 14 months and poor rains.
Swarms in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia remain immature and continue to become smaller. Without rainfall, they will not mature and breed. The upcoming rainy season that is expected to be drier than normal should contribute to a further decline in locusts. ....

The Morrison Government continues to strengthen the nation’s critical minerals sector, with support for two large job creating projects in the Northern Territory.
Major Project Status has been granted to the Finniss Lithium Mine Project and the Mount Peake Vanadium, Titanium and Iron Mine and Processing Facility.
The Mount Peake project will see a mine site established about 235kms north of Alice Springs and a facility set up in Darwin to produce and process vanadium, titanium and iron. This will create up to 1,600 jobs during construction and up to 1000 ongoing jobs during operation. ....

Australia's hydrogen industry celebrates production milestone

A world-first demonstration of an international hydrogen energy supply chain commenced operations today in Australia.
The start of Hydrogen Energy Supply Chain (HESC) operations in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria marks an important day for Australia’s hydrogen industry. The HESC project will produce hydrogen using coal from Victoria’s Latrobe Valley, with the liquefied hydrogen to be exported to Kobe in Japan.
This world leading project is an important step in developing Australia’s hydrogen industry, which is estimated could generate more than 8,000 jobs, many in regional Australia, and over $11 billion a year in GDP by 2050. ....
