The Kerala State Pollution Control Board (PCB) has asked the Indian Medical Association Goes Eco-Friendly (IMAGE) to hand over 10 to 12 tonnes of non-COVID biomedical waste disposed at its facility in Palakkad to the new plant of Kerala Enviro Infrastructure Limited (KEIL) at Ambalamedu here in view of a possible spike in generation of biomedical waste in the State amid the pandemic crisis.
PCB Chairman A.B. Pradeepkumar issued a letter to the secretary of IMAGE under the State chapter of the Indian Medical Association on Wednesday, stating that the Palakkad facility might not be sufficient to manage the entire waste (both COVID and non-COVID) generated in the State. Only 0.6% of the nearly 6.73 tonnes of waste generated in Aluva is treated as per norms, according to official estimates.
The gap in waste management was nearly 6.06 tonnes per day. The inference made by the State Pollution Control Board (PCB) revealed that the untreated waste was either dumped or transported outside in violation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.
The municipality has not yet set up facilities for solid waste processing. It should have identified suitable sites for such facilities. Sanitary landfill sites have to be procured as per the SWM Rules, 2016. The door-to-door collection of segregated waste should have been carried out in covered vehicles to a processing or disposing facility by April 8, 2019, ....

Kerala Enviro Infrastructure Limited (KEIL) has informed the government that operating its new Common Biomedical Waste Treatment Facility at Ambalamedu here with waste generated by the government healthcare facilities in Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam and Malappuram districts alone will not be feasible.
The plant is the second such facility in the State after the Indian Medical Association Goes Eco-friendly (IMAGE) unit in Palakkad. It has the capacity to treat 15 to 16 tonnes of biomedical waste daily. The government has decided to allocate the waste generated in government healthcare facilities in Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam and Malappuram to the new plant loca ....

The proposal for a new biomedical waste treatment plant that was supposed to have been set up at Brahmapuram by Indian Medical Association Goes Eco-Friendly (IMAGE) is at a standstill.
The paperwork had made no progress after the land was allotted to IMAGE last year, said Dr. Abraham Varghese, former IMA State president. The proposed project was to have come up on around three acres of land at Brahmapuram, near the Kochi Corporation’s dumping yard, but a lease agreement for the land has not yet been finalised. ....

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will lay the foundation for the long-pending petrochemicals park here on Tuesday. Industries Minister E.P. Jayarajan will preside over the event, according to a press release from the minister’s office.
