More than three months after launching operations, the bottled water plant at Aruvikkara is yet to see production shift gears to full capacity.
Production at the ₹16-crore facility has not moved beyond the 20-litre jars which had hit the market following the inauguration by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in January this year. Of the three production lines, only one is operational.
The Kerala Irrigation Infrastructure Development Corporation (KIIDC), which runs the plant, had announced plans to bring out one and two litres, and 750 ml and 500 ml bottles under the KIIDC’s ‘Hilly Aqua’ brand. The KIIDC has been marketing the 20-litre jars through the Kudumbashree, but the market has been general ....

Cleaning of 17-km-long waterbody stalled due to paucity of funds
The Konothupuzha river does not seem to be able to catch a break. The waterbody, smothered by waste and weeds, is a victim of long delays that have prevented projects to revive it from taking off.
Work on cleaning the 17-km-long waterbody began in August last year, and it witnessed an inauguration of sorts. But work came to a standstill a few weeks later, since funds had not been sanctioned, said an official of the Minor Irrigation Department. With a small amount that had been sanctioned for an excavator, work began on clearing some weeds, but the department is still awaiting additional funds, the official added. ....

A few stretches of the Periyar, Muvattupuzha river, Kadamprayar and Chithrapuzha, along with 18 others across the State, will see local bodies and students of 33 engineering colleges joining hands to rejuvenate them.
Hundreds of students from these colleges will shortly come up with detailed actionable project reports, which would look into the pollution, conservation and management issues of these rivers.
The initiative comes from the Water Resources Department following a directive from the National Green Tribunal to clean up the 21 critically polluted rivers of the State.
Students have been trained to look for various causative factors of pollution and provided with a template for easy assessment. Student teams are expected to come up with draft DPRs by February, said T.K. Jose, Additional Chief Secretary, who is overseeing the project. ....

Hilly Aqua was first produced from a plant in Thodupuzha, says State’s CM
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday inaugurated the much-awaited bottled water plant at Aruvikkara near here, the second such manufacturing unit to be set up in the public sector in the state.
The plant, envisaged to make the State government s packaged drinking water brand Hilly Aqua , was set up by the Kerala Irrigation Infrastructure Development Corporation (KIDC).
Launching the plant via video conferencing, the Chief Minister said the State government was committed to provide drinking water at an affordable rate and that it would increase the production and supply of quality bottled water from the plant as demand increases. ....
