Library rolling out summer virtual programs

Teens & Tweens
Dungeons & Dragons continues throughout the summer for both teens & tweens. Everyone can join in on Nintendo Switch tournaments featuring Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Mario Kart 8. There are also going to be a variety of fun community service opportunities for teens over the summer, including a pen-pal exchange program and weekly book reviews. The
library’s blog and social media accounts will feature weekly activity ideas for adults & teens.
Adults
For adults, the library will be offering two adult Crafts to Go programs this summer, both of which focus on upcycling. Registered patrons will learn how to create something beautiful out of recycled materials. Virtual Tech One-on-Ones will continue throughout the summer. Many book clubs from around the regional district will continue to meet remotely. The library’s final author event for the season will take place on July 8, featuring Vancouver-based screenwriter and author Roslyn Muir. ....

An online fundraiser for Kamloops s BIG Little Science Centre has picked up over $23,000 in donations so far.
The organization is looking for public support to fund the recent renovations to their new downtown location at the old Value Village on Seymour Street.
Since 2002, the BIG Little Science Centre Society has inspired our community’s children, their families and our teachers to explore and experience science in an entertaining and stimulating environment, the website says.
Executive director Gord Stewart says the renovations are finished at the new location and they are looking forward to a grand opening when public health orders allow. ....

Founder's legacy fund to benefit Big Little Science Centre

“He was all about doing the science. To him, it was a verb: you did it, you didn’t read about it, kind of thing. This centre was that. It is a chance for people to do that. I think his passion for having people try to do science and that’s what we’re hoping to keep going, with the help of that legacy fund.”
Stewart said the $83,000 goal of the campaign is linked to Gore’s age, when he died. The centre is hoping to raise $1,000 per year for every year Gore lived.
The campaign had a soft launch about a month ago and the amount raised so far also includes funds collected by the centre, after Gore’s death. Stewart said the money will go toward operating costs of the centre, which has been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and also was shuffled out of its former location as a result of the Parkcrest elementary fire, which occurred in the fall of 2019. ....
