The Ministry of Environment has captured what it called extremely rare sightings of three endangered species by the same camera in less than a month at a national park in South Jeolla Province.
The species were an otter, a fairy pitta bird and a wildcat. Otters in Korea are classified as a Level 1 endangered species, facing the most imminent threat of extinction. The other two are listed as second-level endangered species. ....

Those planning to go hiking in Jirisan National Park this summer may run into Asiatic black bear cubs born there this year.
According to the Ministry of Environment and the Korea National Park Service, four adult female Asiatic black bears have given birth to a total of six cubs this year. They confirmed the existence of the cubs through cameras installed in and around the bears hibernation area.
Asiatic black bears hibernate from around the end of December to March the following year, and usually give birth to one or two cubs in January or February in their hibernation den. The cubs grow quickly, weighing around three to four kilograms when they come out of the den. ....

Mountain-Climbing Accidents Surge as Beginners Hit Trails

Mountain-climbing accidents in Seoul surged 33 percent last year to 1,745 cases as beginners hit the trails during the coronavirus epidemic.
The Seoul Metropolitan Fire and Disaster Headquarters said Tuesday more beginners in their 20s and 30s took to steep trails and suffered accidents because they climbed only in leggings, sneakers and other leisurewear rather think hiking gear, or simply got lost.
There has been a sharp increase in mountain hiking since the epidemic erupted. The number of people who climbed Seoul s popular Mt. Bukhan alone increased some 15 percent to 6.56 million.
A staffer at the Korea National Park Service attributed the increase to the lockdown of gyms and other indoor sports facilities that has driven fitness fanatics into the great outdoors. ....
