South Korea’s magnetic fusion device Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) has set a new record in the field of fusion by reaching the temperature of over 100 million degree celsius for a period of 20 seconds. The intensity of the temperature reached by the KSTAR can be gauged from the fact that the source of light in the whole universe- the Sun- glows at a temperature of only 15 million degrees Celsius, the Indian Express reported. In comparative terms KSTAR was able to attain 6.6 times the temperature of the Sun. ....

South Korea's Artificial Sun Burns At 100 Million Degrees For 20 Seconds, Sets New World Record

South Korea’s artificial Sun burns at 100 million degrees for 20 seconds, sets new world record
This was the first time a fusion device sustained plasma for more than 10 seconds. More than 250 such tokamak devices have been built so far, but none have been able to achieve this feat thus far.

KSTAR, the so-called Korean artificial sun, has set a record for maintaining plasma at temperatures over 100 million °C
While harnessing the power of the Sun has progressed in leaps and bounds in recent years, harnessing the process that powers the Sun is proving a tough nut to crack. However, progress continues to be made on the various approaches to practical nuclear fusion being pursued, of which tokamak reactors remain a frontrunner. In another promising development for the technology, the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) fusion device has set a world record by maintaining plasma at over 100 million °C (180 million °F) for 20 seconds. ....

South Korea's 'Artificial Sun' Just Set a New World Record For High-Temperature Plasma

29 DECEMBER 2020
Scientists have just set a new world record for high-temperature sustained plasma with the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) device, reaching an ion temperature of above 100 million degrees Celsius (180 million degrees Fahrenheit) for a period of 20 seconds.

Known as Korea s artificial sun , the KSTAR uses magnetic fields to generate and stabilise ultra-hot plasma, with the ultimate aim of making nuclear fusion power a reality – a potentially unlimited source of clean energy that could transform the way we power our lives, if we can get it to work as intended.
Before this point, 100 million degrees hadn t been breached for more than 10 seconds, so it s a substantial improvement on previous efforts – even if there s still a long way to go before we can completely ditch other sources of energy. At this point, nuclear fusion power remains a possibility, not a certainty. ....

Korea's Artificial Sun Breaks World Record Running For An Incredible 20 Seconds

Last month, the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) device, a nuclear fusion reactor known as an artificial sun , broke the world record by maintaining a plasma for an incredible 20 seconds at an ion temperature of over 100 million degrees Celsius (180 million degrees Fahrenheit), which is one of the core conditions for nuclear fusion from such a device.
KSTAR s progress is staggering. It first reached 100 million degrees Celsius in 2018 but only for 1.5 seconds. In 2019, this was extended to 8 seconds. This has now more than doubled. No other device that has been capable of producing plasma this hot (or hotter) has been able to maintain it for more than 10 seconds. ....
