Justice Minister Calls for Strengthening CoE
Justice Minister Judit Varga on Monday called for strengthening the role of the Council of Europe (CoE), saying that the European Union “should not be allowed to overshadow” the organisation’s mandate.
Addressing a meeting of parliament’s foreign affairs committee, Varga noted that Hungary will take over the rotating six-month presidency of the CoE’s Committee of Ministers later this month.
The minister said the principle that the council’s member states should be united in their values and ideas was just as valid today as it had been at the time of the founding of the organisation 70 years ago. However, diversity and national sovereignty are equally important, Varga said, arguing that the council’s member states differed in their legal, cultural and historical traditions. ....

Merkel told the online event on Tuesday, “We are celebrating the tenth anniversary of the opening for signature of the Istanbul Convention, which sets the benchmarks for combating violence against women and domestic violence. That is why it is a matter of deep regret for me that Turkey has decided to withdraw from this Convention.”

YEREVAN, MARCH 17, ARMENPRESS. The European Court of Human Rights (sitting as a Chamber of seven judges) decided on March 9 to notify the Committee of Ministers, pursuant to Rule 39 § 2 of the Rules of Court, of the following interim measures indicated under Rule 39 in relation to the recent armed conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan:
 the decision taken on 29 September 2020, clarified on 4 November 2020, containing an indication of general measures directed at both States; and
 78 decisions taken by the President of the relevant Section between 13 October 2020 and 5 March 2021 in regard to requests for interim measures relating to 249 Armenians allegedly captured by Azerbaijan. These requests have been brought by the Armenian Government within the framework of the inter-State application Armenia v. Azerbaijan (no. 42521 ....
