Some doses of AstraZeneca vaccine wasted as advice changed and demand dropped: Dix

In June, the National Committee on Immunization advised its preferred choice for COVID vaccines was the mRNA type Pfizer and Moderna even for people who received AstraZeneca, a viral-vector vaccine, as a first shot. Use of AstraZeneca had been paused for some age groups pending further study on rare but potentially fatal vaccine-induced blood clots.
Despite provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry saying that AstraZeneca was safe and highly effective, demand for vaccine, which is being delivered through pharmacies, plummeted and some doses expired.
Vikram Bawa, owner of Fort Royal Pharmacy, said his store locations in Oak Bay and on Hillside Avenue continue to deliver AstraZeneca shots, but with decreasing demand he simply groups appointments to ensure he doesn’t waste doses. ....

Pharmacies see AstraZeneca cancellations as age-based program expands to 30 and under

As the province announced 587 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, it reported a second case of a rare blood-clotting syndrome called vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia, or VITT, linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine.
“This is a rare but very serious condition,” said provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry. “We are following it carefully.”
A Fraser Health man in his 40s is being treated for VITT and is in stable condition. A woman in her 40s in the Vancouver Coastal health region was the first case in the province, reported last week.
About 227,000 first doses of AstraZeneca have been administered since the vaccine arrived in the province about two months ago, said B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix. In Canada, about 28 cases of VITT have been reported. ....

On Tuesday, Ontario said it will stop giving out first doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine for now, due to what it said is a one in 60,000 risk of a rare blood-clotting syndrome called vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia, or VITT.
That province’s top doctor said the decision was made out of “an abundance of caution.” Dr. David Williams stressed that those who have received AstraZeneca so far made the right decision, based on the advice available at the time.
Eight people in Ontario have developed the rare blood clot. One case has been reported in B.C. the woman in her 40s was treated and is being monitored. ....

Sarah Gaudet got a surprise jab in the arm Monday at the Fort Royal Pharmacy in Oak Bay.
The 36-year-old didn’t think she’d get a chance to have an AstraZeneca vaccine after pharmacies on Vancouver Island had run dry of the vaccine a few weeks ago. But multiple pharmacies in Greater Victoria got sudden supplies of it in the past few days.
“I was in a store when I got the call and hung up on my fiance, and did a happy dance in the aisle,” said Guadet on Monday, recalling the call she got from the pharmacy with the news. ....
