Safety is the top priority for Waka Kotahi, so while we are working on a wider long-term plan for transport options in Auckland’s Northwest, we are looking to quickly implement changes to make one of the areas busiest intersections safer now.
“We’ve heard from the community that a solution is needed now to improve safety at the Coatesville/Riverhead Highway intersection with SH16. Auckland drivers 'strongly oppose' speed limit cuts which led to $3.7m in fines

Despite these low numbers, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s Crash Analysis System shows there have been many crashes, including fatal crashes, along the highway in past years.
Emma Pownall said she thought she spoke for a lot of locals when describing the speed reduction as “deplorable”.
“Motorists who have driven this road daily for decades are frustrated,” Pownall said.

“Most feel that 80kmh was a perfectly reasonable speed for this stretch of road.”
Pownall said she had seen drivers become impatient with those driving at the new speed, with tailgating and dangerous overtaking happening.
She had received two $80 fines for exceeding the speed limit herself, and said although she tried to keep to 60kmh, it was almost an “impossible task”. ....

36,000 fines issued on Auckland highway in six months after speed limit cut

Thirty-four drivers were caught by cameras going more than 50kmh over the speed limit.

The majority of speedsters caught by police officers were travelling between 16kmh and 20kmh over the limit, while those caught most often via a speed camera were going between 11kmh and 15kmh too fast.
July, the month after the speed reduction came into effect, saw the most fines handed out – a total of 8490.
