When streets were deserted and shops shut their doors as a result of a pandemic, there was a population out there which did not know what was happening. Stray dogs depend on the kindness of good-hearted people and the waste dumped on the corners of roads to survive. But the lockdowns proved to be a bitter experience for them. ....

Sunilkumar, whose wife had recovered from breast cancer only recently, was struggling to gather enough money for his dialysis and medicines after being hit hard by the pandemic and the cost of his wife’s treatment. Olivea, who knew she had to do her bit to help the family, discussed the matter with her father Joby Chuvannamannu and came up with an idea. But for PR Rajan, 70, democracy lies in the choice not to get his finger inked. The Manalur native, who realised he had an allergic reaction to the indelible ink after he cast his vote during the 2016 assembly polls, was armed with a medical certificate for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, which allowed him to put his foot down and tell the polling agents to refrain from applying the ink on him. ....

But these awards hardly make a difference to him as he continues to pursue writing, be it in Malayalam or Konkani. Born in Alappuzha, Vadyar, who retired as a senior superintendent from the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), has authored a handful of novels. Of these, two were children s novels in Konkani.Vadyar was chosen for the prestigious national award for ‘Balu’ which narrates the story of a Konkani boy who collects scrap for a living.
