Expectations run high on big-ticket projects in Kozhikode

Many projects such as the Light Metro, Mananchira-Vellimadukunnu corridor have all hit roadblocks
Newly elected legislators of Kozhikode North and Kozhikode South Constituencies have high expectations to implement big ticket projects such as the Light Metro for the development of city.
For various reasons, the ₹2,775 crore Light Metro proposed for the city has not been dealt with or considered seriously for more than five years. One of reason for it is that the State government failed to secure the mandatory clearance from the Centre’s Public Investment Board.
Now a fresh initiative such as the Metro-Neo is in the offing. Two-time Mayor Thottathil Raveendran, who won from Kozhikode North, has already taken steps to look into the feasibility of the project. ....

Congress leader M.K. Raghavan, MP, has flayed the State Budget presented by Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac for not offering solutions to the ‘needs’ of Kozhikode.
He said that the budget had totally ignored the Mananchira- Vellimadukunnu road widening project in the second phase of the Kozhikode City Road Improvement Scheme. Previously, the government had assured that a sum of ₹184 crore would be made available for the project this year fiscal.
Mr. Raghavan said that the budget made no mention about the development of Calicut International Airport.
Land has to be acquired for the expansion of the airport. After the Air India Express accident in August last year, the government had promised to take up the issue, he said. ....

Road widening project excluded from second phase of Kozhikode City Road Improvement Project
The Mananchira-Vellimadukunnu Road Action Committee has come out against Kozhikode North MLA A. Pradeepkumar, seeking clarification on the exclusion of the road widening project from the second phase of the Kozhikode City Road Improvement Project.
The committee leaders, including historian M.G.S. Narayanan, Gandhian Thayat Balan, Mathew Kattikkana and M.P. Vasudevan, in a statement here, said the 8-km stretch of Mananchira-Vellimadukunnu Road that needed to be widened had not been included in the recently announced projects. However, it welcomed the decision of the State government to improve eight roads in the second phase. ....
