(file photo) MANGALURU: The traffic performance of New Mangalore Port (NMP) is expected to increase considerably through the implementation of 33 national highway projects that Union minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari launched recently, said NMP Trust chairman Venkata Ramana Akkaraju. He said the port will be able to handle at least 77 million metric tons (MMT) of cargo by 2030 once the national highway projects are completed. While there was a target of handling 68 MMT of cargo in the current fiscal year, the port handled 25.53 MMT till November, as against 27.23 MMT for the same period in the previous year. ....

He called upon the State of Karnataka to take up the production of ethanol in a big way, as it is one of the largest producers of sugarcane in the country. The country is already over-producing sugar and rice, and sufficient stock are available with the government. The surplus may be converted to Ethanol, which can be used as an alternative fuel for vehicles. This will not only improve farmers income but will also be an indigenous source of fuels for the country, he said. ....
