Sometimes you could be excused for thinking the Morrison federal government and the Berejiklian state government are trying to outdo each other with pork barrelling. Morrison serves up a rorted Building Better Regions Fund favouring Coalition electorates, Berejiklian returns serve with handouts to amalgamating councils – except the bulk of the funding went to Liberal-controlled LGAs, some of whom were not even amalgamating (Hornsby council, anyone?). Morrison then replies with the infamous sports rorts program, so Berejiklian replies with her Stronger Communities Programme. Morrison then hits a winning backhand with $30 million for land belonging to a favoured donor in Leppington in western Sydney when the land was only valued at $3 milli ....

A report reveals vested interests keep donating millions of dollars to political parties to play their political games (“Secretive donors give $1 billion to political parties”, February 1).
The federal disclosure scheme is not working. We have become a nation of shruggers. Politicians shrug off this and their lack of integrity and accountability. Voters shrug this off as they know that is just what politicians do. Enough of shrugging. We want changes to this system and perhaps action on the problems of climate change will happen.

Joel Fitzgibbon’s climate change stance looks set to completely derail Labor’s prospects in the next election (“‘Shrill, elitist, out of touch’: Fitzgibbon lets fly at critics”, December 17). Not since “Joh for Canberra” in 1987 has there been such a spectacular own-goal in the making. Labor need not endorse Fitzgibbon to run for another term. If they do, it will tell us everything we need to know about their suitability, and also their prospects, of forming a majority government in 2021/22. ....
