New Delhi, May 22: Cleric-politician Mirwaiz Farooq, President of Awami Action Committee (AAC), and the Peoples Conference (PC) founder-president, Abdul Gani Lone, met an identical fate. While Mirwaiz was shot dead in a terror strike at his Nageen residence on May 21, 1990, Lone with two Police guards was gunned down at Srinagars sprawling Eidgah grounds at the end of a commemoration ceremony for Mirwaiz on May 21, 2002.

GUWAHATI: Assam’s imprisoned peasants’ leader Akhil Gogoi, who created history when he became the first candidate in the state to win assembly election while in judicial custody, was the centre of attention as he, along with 124 other members, was sworn-in as a member of the newly elected 15th Assam legislative assembly on Friday.
Gogoi, who won from Sivasagar assembly constituency without even campaigning by defeating the BJP candidate, was out on a one-day bail to facilitate his swearing-in as an MLA. Soon after the day’s proceedings in the house, he was escorted under heavy security back to judicial custody in a cabin at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital where he is being housed on health grounds. ....

As per the amended Freedom of Religion Bill, a forcible conversion by marriage, or by getting a person married, or by aiding a person to get married shall invite imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of up to Rs 2 lakh.
