Taipei, May 11 (CNA) Veterinarians in Taiwan can now apply for a permit that will allow them to use certain human drugs to treat pets in an emergency situation, Legislator Chen Ting-fei (陳亭妃) said Tuesday.
Under the new system, human drugs currently not on the list of 611 approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for regular use in animals may be administered to pets deemed to be in critical condition, if the appropriate veterinary drug is not available, Chen said at a press conference.
Vets, however, will need to apply via a veterinary medical association for a permit that would allow them to use a human drug in emergency cases, said Chen, a Democratic Progressive Party lawmaker and animal rights advocate. ....

Taipei, April 27 (CNA) Taiwan s Legislature on Tuesday passed an amendment to the Animal Protection Act that expands the definition of abuse to include acts of omission, with those convicted facing a maximum of two years in prison and a fine of up to NT$2 million (US$71,800).
Before the amendment was passed, abuse was defined as actively harming or treating animals in such a way as to render them unable to physically function for example by injuring them or causing organ failure as a result of violence, administering the wrong drugs or other improper behavior when rearing, looking after or dealing with them. ....

The Executive Yuan is considering measures to prevent Chinese commercial espionage and the poaching of core technologies, especially in semiconductors and information technology, sources said.
The Executive Yuan is considering amendments to the National Security Act (國家安全法) and the Trade Secrets Act (營業秘密法) to respond to increasing reports of Chinese firms recruiting Taiwanese and stealing core technologies, the sources said.
Although Taiwan prohibits firms from China from doing business or recruiting locally without prior approval, some companies conceal their Chinese ownership to recruit workers, they said. ....
