Powassan farmer awarded grant money to expand his yurt business

A Powassan farmer is celebrating after being awarded a $3,000 grant along with a three-month mentorship program to help grow his tourism business.
Matthew Larivee owns Foxfire Heritage Farm and operates a yurt which people can stay overnight in and get farming and real life outdoors experience.
He was one of three winners from Northern Ontario to win the Northern Ontario Spark Program tourism innovation award.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic began, Larivee would have tourists stay in the yurts during the fall and winter to get the outdoor and farming experience. The yurts do not have power and there is an outhouse nearby. ....

Temiskaming Shores daycare workers ecstatic to be included in vaccine rollout

Daycare workers in Temiskaming Shores are celebrating the news that they will be getting their first dose of the vaccine to fight against COVID-19 very soon.
Tracey Whalen, an early child educator of 15 years, says it was frustrating to see other groups get added to the vaccine rollout.
That is until she learned the local health unit there announced it is starting the process for day care workers in May.
It just seemed like the story kept changing, Whalen told CTV News.
When the vaccines first came out, they said we would be in phase two with the teachers and we just kept getting pushed down. ....

Third victim has died after fatal Sudbury fire

A 33-year-old woman has died in hospital following a major fire that killed two others at a Sudbury housing unit, Sudbury police said Monday morning in a news release.
Her name is not being released at the request of the family.
Firefighters were called to a residential complex at 744 Bruce Ave. in the Flour Mill at 4:45 a.m. April 11 after a neighbour saw smoke and flames.
Approximately 15 people were evacuated from the section of townhouses, but a 50-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were killed as a result of the blaze.
The 33-year-old had been carried out of the building by firefighters and was taken to the Sudbury hospital before being airlifted to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, where she died five days later of her injuries. ....

Coronavirus: COVID outbreak declared at Glencore's Kidd operations mine site in Timmins

The Porcupine Health Unit is declaring an outbreak of COVID-19 at the Glencore’s Kidd Operations Mine Site in Timmins.
To date, three employees are confirmed cases of COVID-19 and the investigation has determined that the cases are related to the workplace, the health unit said in a news release.
The cases are currently in self-isolation.
The health unit is working with the workplace to ensure infection prevention and control measures are in place, the release said.
The management team at Glencore’s Kidd operations mine site is taking all the necessary precautions to reduce the risk of infection and prevent the transmission of COVID, the release said. ....
