For residents of Apapa and those who transact business in the area, the last two weeks have been horrendous. The traffic situation into the port city has been an abiding source of heartache and nightmare. Everyday of last week, they spent three to four hours to get to their destinations, which is very dangerous to their mental health. The usually one-lane access left for commuters and cars have been taken over by trucks and tankers, leaving them into total disappointment and frustration. ....

DESPITE introduction of the electronic-Call Up system into port operations, there seems to be no end in sight to the Apapa gridlock, as container-laden vehicles and tankers continue to park indiscriminately along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.
The situation has made motorists and commuters undergo anguish daily as they expressed doubt over Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s inability to restore sanity in the axis after relieving the Federal Government’s task team of their duties on the road.
Stakeholders meeting on e-Call-up system
The Lagos State Government, Nigeria Ports Authority, NPA, and other stakeholders had agreed to adopt a new e-Call-up system for trucks at a crucial meeting which commenced on February 27, 2021, which is based on a first-come-first-serve basis. ....

Daily Trust - Apapa gridlock: Extortion causes nightmare, losses for impor


Uniformed men, especially those purportedly working for the disbanded task team, have been blamed for this by truck drivers and importers.
The escalating incidents of corrupt practices involving uniformed men, particularly the police and those from the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA), have led to various forms of protests by truck drivers, which Daily Trust has captured in a series of reports.
Part of the extortion scheme is the aiding and abetting of illegal use of the Apapa outward lane by truck drivers or owners who pay bribes of about N250, 000 to the uniformed agents.
Others who officially pay for a tag, which was originally initiated by the truck owners association as a means of controlling traffic at the onset of the gridlock caused by failed portions of the roads, are made to wait on queue for over a week. ....
