Racial discrimination: Doctors call for decisive action


A recent interim report by the Council of Medical Schemes has found the claims to be true.
It discovered that black general practitioners were more likely to be identified as committing fraud, waste, and abuse of medical schemes than white GPs.  
Section 59 Health Dr Prudence Buthelezi said, “we already know what the medical aids use to do to black health professionals. It was racial profiling…they’d look at the invoice of the patient, when you see more than 50 patients they alert you as fraudulent, ask you  time you spent with the patient.
COVID-19 has already been stressful enough for the healthcare practitioners but many couldn’t cope with being discriminated against as well.  ....

Adding weight to this prospect is the fact that the independent panel’s findings into allegations of medical aid schemes and administrators withholding payments to black and Indian doctors on perception of fraudulent claims have twice been blocked on the eve of being made public.
The report was initially scheduled to be released on 16 December but Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize instructed it could not be released without him being appraised of its contents, sentiments echoed by the CMS. ....

The Council for Medical Scheme (CMS) has published its annual report for 2019/2020, outlining the cost of doctor visits and other medical specialists in South Africa.
The report shows that the amount of money paid to supplementary and allied health professionals increased by 9.25% from R12.9 billion in 2018 to R14.1 billion in 2019.
Of this amount, open medical schemes spent R7.9 billion, and restricted medical schemes spent just over R6.2 billion.
