The Philippines’ Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) is providing a one-off 252 million peso (US$5.21 million) grant to over 12,000 civil servants who retired early due to work-related illness, injury or disability, to help alleviate their financial hardship from the coronavirus pandemic. The pension fund, which manages the retirement savings of civil servants, will pay the pensioners 20,000 pesos each. “The payment of such financial assistance will have no effect on the Social Insurance Fund to which the contribution of GSIS members goes,” GSIS President and General Manager Rolando L. Macasaet says in a statement on April 25. The pension fund had 1.31 trillion pesos of total assets as of end-2019, according to its latest available annual report.

Addressing a Pensions Commission webinar, Age Action Senior Public Affairs and Policy Specialist Dr Nat O Connor noted that in certain sectors of the economy, a majority of employers do not offer a company pension scheme. As a result, more than one in ten older people were at risk of poverty, while more than one in every nine experiences material deprivation. He said lower paid workers were particularly vulnerable to being unable to save for retirement beyond the state pension.
