Galway pier to temporarily close "in the interest of public safety" after large gatherings | JOE is the voice of Irish people at home and abroad

Galway City Council has closed off access at Wolfe Tone Bridge and at Claddagh Quay opposite St. Mary’s Church from early Saturday morning.
The Council has said the closure is in the interest of public safety and will provide assistance in relation to social distancing.
The temporary closure will be in place for a number of weeks.

Cllr Clare Claffey, Social Democrats Councillor for the Birr Area of Offaly County Council has reiterated her party s support for a Just Transition and a response to climate change that takes communities into account.
Speaking after the Social Democrats’ online National Conference on Saturday, Claffey said: “Climate change is the biggest societal challenge we face. It will impact on every aspect of our lives - in fact, it already has.
To date, we’ve seen climate change primarily as an environmental issue and our responses to it have often been compartmentalised and ultimately unsuccessful. But climate change is not just about the environment, it is about how our economy is structured, about workers’ rights, housing, poverty, and ultimately, human rights. ....

A motion calling on the government to legislate on the difficult issue of parental alienation was withdrawn at Offaly County Council’s recent meeting following a contribution by Offaly’s only female councillor, Clare Claffey.
Parental alienation is when one parent causes a child to be alienated from their other parent, either by their words, attitudes or behaviour.
Speaking at last week’s meeting, the Social Democrats Councillor said: “At face value, this motion looks credible and our first reaction would be to agree with it but we have to look at the hidden impact this will have for victims of domestic abuse. ....

Galway Bay fm newsroom – City councillor Owen Hanley says he’s very disappointed that Galway city has been overlooked for a new fire station within the next 5 years, in a nationwide 61 million euro investment announced by Minister Darragh O’Brien.
The Social Democrats Councillor has slammed the new Fire Service Capital Programme 2021-2025 which has no provision for a new fire station in Galway City, although it includes new stations in Athenry and Loughrea.
He says the Claddagh based fire station is nearly 70 years old, and the staff deserve the support and resources associated with a new building in order to serve a growing city. ....
