MALAWI has ordered a sugar factory to suspend its operations after 41 workers tested positive for the novel coronavirus and one died, Malawi media reported on Friday.
Daily newspaper The Nation reported that health experts were of the view that closing down the Salima Sugar Factory alone was not enough, and called for extensive contact tracing and screening of community members surrounding the factory, as the Covid-19 variant might have originated in India, where 22 out of the 41 local and foreign workers who tested positive recently came from. ....

Salima Sugar Company closes its estate over CoVID-19 spread

Following a directive from Minister Health, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, Salima Sugar Company has temporarily suspended its operations for the next 14 days in order to contain the CoVID-19 spread that affected its estate.
“We have agreed with the Honourable Minister and are hereby temporarily stopping operations at the Salima estate,” said the company in a staff memo issued on Tuesday.
The company advises the staff to continue observing social distance and to wear masks as well as observing other measures whilst at home.

“The directive [from Ministry of Health] dictates that all staff that are positive will be at institutional quarantine in Salima or Lilongwe,” says the memo issued by company secretary, Charles Thupi. ....

Indian nation at Salima Sugar Factor dies of COVID-19

One Indian national at the Salima Sugar Factory, who just arrived from India and was diagnosed with Covid-19, has died.
Salima Sugar Factor Secretary Dr. Charles Thupi confirmed of the development in an interview with Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS).
According to Thupi, the deceased was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kamuzu Central Hospital yesterday Monday.
But Thupi said he cannot confirm if the death is due to Covid-19.
Meanwhile, the Salima district Health Office is conducting mass Covid-19 testing to all workers at the sugar factory as directed by the Minister of Health last week.
