Monroe Fire Chief Rob Wight felt a pang of sadness on Monday as he drove down Scott Street and passed by the city s old Central Fire Station.
It was hard for Wight not to think of the 21 years he spent manning the now-defunct building, which crews from Salenbien Trucking and Excavating of Dundee began demolishing this week.
It s kind of a sad moment actually, driving by it and seeing it like that, Wight said Tuesday. .It served us well. It just wasn t able to serve us anymore I guess.
The demolition of the 53-year-old building is expected to be completed by the original target date of June 30, despite a delay that occurred when the original firm hired by the city to oversee the project suffered an outbreak of the coronavirus among its employees. ....

COVID strikes again / outbreak leads to changes in demo of old Monroe fire station
A local company picked to demolish the City of Monroe s old Central Fire Station will no longer handle the job due to a COVID-19 outbreak among its employees.
City Council on Monday unanimously agreed to rescind a contract for the demolition that was originally awarded to Thomas Trucking Services, Inc. of Monroe, and instead award it to Salenbien Trucking & Excavating, Inc. of Dundee.
Thomas Trucking was the low bidder at $73,000 back in March when council initially decided who would demolish the building located on Scott St. But Salenbien was the second-lowest bidder at $75,000, and the company has agreed to honor the initial bid as it takes over the project and attempts to raze the old fire house by the original target date of June 30. ....
