The newly appointed finance minister faces two critical challenges to revive the economy. The first one is the external trade imbalance – at present, export earnings cover just 50 percent of the country’s imports, resulting in the trade deficit. The agriculture sector has been underperforming for quite some time, and the manufacturing sector is facing capacity constraint with low investment. Therefore, the government’s focus should be on compressing the import of luxury/unnecessary foreign items as well those goods that are being produced locally. This step will help it save between $8 and 10 billion. The second challenge is the narrow tax base. An increase of around 50 percent is required in tax collection to balance the budget. Can the finance minister expand the tax base by bringing tax evaders into the tax net? ....

ISLAMABAD: The World Bank on Tuesday reiterated support to Pakistan for overcoming challenges in the energy sector and reaffirmed its commitment to assistance for the implementation of structural reforms.
World Bank Managing Director (Operations) Axel van Trotsenburg lauded the socioeconomic coverage extended to the marginalised sections of the society during Coronavirus pandemic. He held a virtual meeting Minister for Finance and Revenue Shaukat Tarin.

VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN): President Thongloun Sisoulith has called for friendly nations in the region and around the world which are suffering the same fate to strengthen their trust and unity to overcome the challenges they currently face.
Thongloun made the call when speaking at the online Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2021 held in Boao, south China’s Hainan province, on Tuesday (April 20).
China’s President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote speech via video during the opening ceremony of the conference, which was attended by senior officials from China as well as heads of state and government from 29 countries. ....

Foreign funding case: PTI challenges ECP order on accounts perusal

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Monday challenged the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) order of allowing perusal of its accounts by experts, saying permitting the outside assistance would sabotage the scrutiny process.
Issuing its order on a complaint in the PTI foreign funding case on April 14, the ECP had allowed the petitioner Akbar S Babar and the PTI to peruse all documents with the assistance of two financial experts/ chartered accountants in eight days, under the supervision of the ECP officials.
In the media, it was reported that the PTI had welcomed the order, and that the complaint by the petitioner had been rejected by the ECP in its order. The operative part of the order stated that “the scrutiny committee is granted eight regular working days to both the parties from 10am to 3pm to inspect/ peruse the records/ documents, submitted by both parties and that both sides are allowed to take help of two technical persons ( ....
