United Way Regina introducing literacy initiatives for school children this year By Moises Canales Jan 27, 2021 1:12 PM United Way Regina is taking part in a number of initiatives over the next year to help early childhood literacy rates in the city. Amanda Lanoway, director of engagement with United Way Regina, said the city has partnered with the Campaign for Grade Level Reading Network (CGLR) in order to provide access to literacy supports for schools and community organizations. “Education is foundational to preventing poverty, violence and crime; learning how to read is a critical piece of this education puzzle. The CGLR focuses on one factor which predicts school success better than all others: Grade 3 reading,” reads a statement by United Way Regina on the newly announced project. ....
Anderson and Kiliwnik, the two professional leaders, tag-teamed the offering as they explored the data and charts that were offered online to bolster their verbal report. Kiliwnik said educational support was offered on three tiers that included core, targeted or intensive. She said 80 per cent of the general student population responds positively to Tier 1 supports while five per cent require intensive support. Anderson noted teachers in all of the division’s 38 schools and online services support the strategy and research for early intervention, which they suggested was a key to success since intentional planning can then take place and the type of intervention required is sorted out more immediately and total learning needs of all students are then known. ....

ECS played a big role in preparing those meals. “The school division tried to help out where they could. Myself at ECS and Ardell (Pearson) in Weyburn offered to help out by making some of the meals for families that could use that assistance,” said Curtis Hack, the chef instructor and technical education department head at ECS. Each meal was sufficient to feed a family of five. The schools were so cost-efficient with their expenses that they still had money left over from the spring, and they decided to prepare more meals in December. “The menus seemed to be positive last spring, so we did the same thing this fall. People were very grateful. We had lots of compliments from people and we got lots of thank yous from school division people,” said Hack. ....
