Suicide prevention bill passes in Sask. legislature, first proposed by MLA Vermette

The private members’ bill was initially put forward by MLA Doyle Vermette, who represents Creighton, Denare Beach and all other communities in northeast Saskatchewan in legislature. The NDP MLA had put forward two other suicide prevention bills in the past, once in 2018 and once in 2019, which were both voted down by Saskatchewan Party MLAs.
“I can’t stop thinking of all the families over the last few years who have approached me to share their story of a child, a parent or loved one they’ve lost,” said Vermette in a Saskatchewan NDP news release.
“We told them we wouldn’t give up and we would keep pushing this government to do more, to be better, and to do the right thing. It was a long road to get here but really it’s those families that I’m thinking of right now.” ....

That the Saskatchewan Party government would have embarrassed itself by rejecting an identical version of Vermette’s bill last June was at best a testimonial of how woefully uninformed our government was on this matter. At worst, it was a testimonial to how politics far too often takes precedence. ....

The Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly unanimously passed The Saskatchewan Strategy for Suicide Prevention Act after Cumberland NDP MLA Doyle Vermette introduced it for a third time on Friday.
“This to me is something that the people of our province that are struggling with mental health should be very proud that they have achieved,” Vermette said. ....

NDP MLA Doyle Vermette was overwhelmed and emotional Friday afternoon, just minutes after the Legislative Assembly unanimously passed The Saskatchewan Strategy for Suicide Prevention Act after the third time he introduced it.
“The government and Her Majesty’s loyal opposition came together for the people, and the people have won, of this province. And that’s what it’s about and should be about sometimes,” said Vermette.
“We have many days to disagree and debate stuff in the chamber, but today we can say we walked away and Saskatchewan people, those struggling with mental health, you won. And we’re going to do everything we can. That’s the commitment I’ve got and what I think I’ve heard from the government supporting this.” ....
