Roughly 1,100 more cases of COVID-19 had been discovered in Alberta as of Thursday.
Dr. Deena Hinshaw, chief medical officer of health, gave an update on Twitter with “estimated” new COVID-19 numbers.

No additional deaths had been reported. Another 15,600 tests were run, with seven per cent of cases testing positive. Hospitalizations were said to be “increasing” and ICU stays were “stable.”
Hinshaw’s next in-person update is on Monday and she’s expected to estimate new numbers, via Twitter, on Boxing Day. ....

The Grey Nuns Community Hospital was facing a deadly COVID-19 outbreak when registered nurse Nick Beil turned to his colleagues from a century ago for advice on how to persevere through a catastrophic pandemic.
Nothing in his two decades as a nurse compares to what the emergency department has come up against during the pandemic. The south Edmonton hospital has been contending with outbreaks on three units since late October. ....

Violent conflicts over mandatory mask bylaws are a “significant concern” in the city that has to stop, Edmonton’s police chief says.
Between Aug. 1 and Dec. 7, police laid 39 criminal charges when conflicts over wearing masks escalated into violence, Chief Dale McFee said at a police commission meeting Thursday.

Most of the violent altercations happened in retail and other customer-facing locations like convenience stores, malls and restaurants. Twenty victims were either store employees or members of the public. Security guards, transit officers, bus drivers and paramedics were among other victims. ....
