Defence lawyers urged a magistrate on Monday to dismiss charges against a married couple, who allegedly refused quarantine orders, claiming they were charged under the “wrong” law.
Fabian Antone John, 46, and his wife, Vanessa Maylin John, 48, from Kingsland Heights, Christ Church, were reportedly at the centre of an April 26 standoff with public health and law enforcement officials. They each face a charge of refusing to carry out the Chief Medical Officer’s order under
Section 12 Subsection 1 (b) of the 1950 Quarantine Act.
The two pleaded not guilty when they appeared before Magistrate Elwood Watts in the District ‘C’ Magistrates’ Court. ....

A 54-year-old landlord was fined and also placed on a bond after he admitted breaching the COVID-19 protocols as well as stealing some concrete blocks.
Vibert Alphonso Ambris, of Lot 5 Deans Land Development, Silver Hill, Christ Church, pleaded guilty to contravening Paragraph 3, Sub-paragraph 1 of the Emergency Management (COVID-19) (Curfew) (No.6) Directive, which requires all people to remain indoors from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., in that he left home while not being an employee of an essential service or person who had an emergency, on March 24.
He also confessed to stealing 15 concrete blocks worth $37.35 belonging to Lolita Patricia Bowen on the same date. ....

On the very day Wayde Mclloyd Grant was released from prison he found himself again in trouble with the law after smoking crack cocaine – his drug of choice.
The 48-year-old from Taylor’s Gap, Rock Hall, St George never ventured to his residence on February 27 when he was released from the Dodds, St Philip facility, in the morning, after serving three months there.
Instead of going home, he told Magistrate Elwood Watts “I just come from getting something to smoke.”
Grant had, moments before, pleaded guilty to loitering at the Fairchild Street Bus Terminal last Saturday. He was unable to give a satisfactory account of himself. ....

Seven months after serving a prison sentence in connection with an offence at Carrington Estates Limited, 44-year-old Kirk Orlando Small was back at Dodds. This time he is on remand for allegedly committing an act of predial larceny at the same location.
Small, who is recorded as having no fixed place of abode, but told Magistrate Elwood Watts that he resides with his sister at Blades Hill, St Philip, is also facing a breach of curfew charge and is expected to reappear before the District ‘C’ Magistrates’ Court on March 18.
The accused who is known to the court is charged with stealing 47 pounds of sweet potatoes worth $141 on February 17. ....
