Two more Indigenous deaths in custody take Australia's total since the start of March to seven

The number of Indigenous people to die in custody across Australia since the start of March has risen to seven, following another two confirmed deaths in NSW and Victoria.
On Tuesday, Corrections Victoria revealed an Aboriginal man had died at Port Phillip Prison on Monday evening.
The death, believed to related to a medical episode, has been reported to the coroner. The family of the man has been notified, as has the Aboriginal Justice Caucus, and a smoking ceremony is being arranged, a spokesperson said on Tuesday afternoon.
Meanwhile, Corrective Services NSW has separately confirmed a 37-year-old Indigenous man was found dead at Cessnock Correctional Centre on Tuesday morning.  ....

Two Indigenous Men From NSW And Victoria Died In Custody This Week


The 37-year-old’s name is currently undisclosed and his cause of death unverified.
In Victoria, a man died late Monday in Port Phillip Prison, Truganina, west of Melbourne.
The Australian Associated Press reported his death was related to a medical episode. The family of the unidentified man were notified and a Smoking Ceremony is being arranged, according to a Department of Communities and Justice spokesperson.
“We recognise that all deaths in custody have impacts on family members, friends, corrections staff, victims of crime, and the Aboriginal community,” the spokesperson said.
Greens senator Lidia Thorpe described the slew of Indigenous deaths in custody this year as a “national crisis” on Twitter. ....

Separately, NSW authorities confirmed a 37-year-old man was found dead in his cell at Cessnock Correctional Centre on Tuesday morning.
“Another two people dead. More suffering and more pain,” Thorpe, a Gunnai Gunditjmara DjabWurrung woman, said.
“What kind of country asks that its First Peoples bear this kind of pain and trauma? What kind of government refuses to act in the face of this kind of crisis? Our grief is constant. It is never-ending.
Thorpe said Indigenous Australians were “heartbroken”.
“Our thoughts are with these families today that are suffering in a way that no one should ever have to experience,” she said. ....

Two Aboriginal people have died in Australian prisons in less than 24 hours, as authorities investigate the circumstances.
A man, 37, died at the Cessnock Correctional Centre on Tuesday morning, after being found unresponsive in his cell about 10am, a Corrective Services NSW spokeswoman confirmed.
He was found unresponsive in his cell at about 10am before he was pronounced dead at 11.15am, the spokeswoman said.
Corrective Services NSW and NSW Police are investigating the incident. All deaths in custody are subject to a coronial inquest. ....
