SWAN, which is a group of volunteers that came together to help migrant workers when the first COVID-19 lockdown was imposed in 2020, said the Ministry announced relaunch of its 20 control rooms set up to field distress calls from workers last year. The helplines included contact details of 100 Labour Commissioners acr ....

The rise in coronavirus cases could decline by end May, early June, says virologist Gagandeep Kang

Virologist Gagandeep Kang on Wednesday said that the trend of rising Covid-19 cases may decline by the end of this month or early June, reported
The Hindu.
“Best guess estimates from a number of models put this somewhere between the middle and end of the month,” she said during a webinar organised by the Indian Women Press Corps. “Some models have it [second wave] going out in early June. Based on what we are seeing now, middle to end of May would be a reasonable estimate.”
Kang also said India may witness two or more peaks of coronavirus cases, but they may not be as devastating as the second wave. Covid-19 was doing a “world through” in spaces it could not venture into last year and therefore there was a massive rise in infections among the middle class population and in the rural areas. But she said there was going to be “very little fuel” for the coronavirus to continue with this trend. ....

Covid lockdown: Migrant worker from Odisha takes gold loan of Rs 30,000 to buy food

Migrant worker Sushil Raut has had no work since the Delhi government imposed a lockdown on April 17.
The plumber from Kendrapada, Odisha, who lives in a rented room in a south Delhi slum with his family has not received any assistance from anywhere, either.
Raut took a loan of Rs 30,000 from Muthoot Finance against his wife’s gold ornaments on Monday to feed his family of four, which includes two young children.
“There’s no point going back home. Travelling involves (Covid) risk. The Odisha government has imposed a lockdown too, so there won’t be any work there, either. I took the loan because I have no income,” Raut told The Telegraph. ....
