You can help identify what’s killing lorikeets
Lorikeets in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland are becoming paralysed, often resulting in death. Scientists are beginning to discover why – but need your help.
Distribution of known lorikeet paralysis syndrome cases.
A new study brings us one step closer to ensuring the health and wellbeing of wild rainbow lorikeets.
Researchers from the University of Sydney identified the prevalence, distribution, and manifestation of lorikeet paralysis syndrome – a seasonal disease (October to June) that affects thousands of rainbow lorikeets each year in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland.
The syndrome can cause limb, neck, and tongue paralysis, and an inability to blink or swallow, rendering birds unable to fly and feed, and therefore, survive. ....

A new study led by the University of Sydney has revealed how invasive plants are posing a new threat to critically endangered flying foxes on Christmas Island. The researchers found that introduced plant species reduce the nutritional value of the flying foxes’ diets.
The researchers collected and analyzed 125 native and non-native plant samples, representing the most common plants on which the Christmas Island flying fox feeds. The analysis showed that the nutritional content of the flying foxes’ diets do not provide a balanced meal.
“Compared to native fruit, introduced fruit had significantly more carbohydrates but lower mineral concentrations,” said study lead author Laura Pulscher from the Sydney School of Veterinary Science. ....

Polyfluoroalkyl Substances ( PFAS )
The discovery represents another likely blow to the survival of Australian sea lions. Hookworm and tuberculosis had already threatened their few and decreasing population, which has reduced by over 60 percent over four decades.
The new research which is part of a lengthy health study of sea lions and seals in Australia - noticed the chemicals from 2017 to 2020 in animals at different colonies in Victoria and South Australia. ....

Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been a long-standing issue and have contaminated the environment, drinking water, eels and more. Firefighting foam containing PFAS were banned in New Zealand in 2006.
Now, a study has found PFAS - in some cases at high concentrations - in seal lion and fur seal pups in Australia.
The chemicals were found in the animals at multiple colonies in Victoria and South Australia from 2017 to 2020.
A media release stated: Particularly high concentrations of the chemicals were found in newborns - transferred during gestation or via their mothers milk. researchers believe the seals and sea lions ingested the chemicals through their fish, crustacean, octopus and squid diets. ....

A chemical that the NSW government has recently partially banned in firefighting has been found in the pups of endangered Australian sea lions and in Australian fur seals.
The finding represents another possible blow to Australian sea lions survival. Hookworm and tuberculosis already threaten their small and diminishing population, which has fallen by more than 60 percent over four decades.
The new research - part of a long-term health study of seals and sea lions in Australia - identified the chemicals in animals at multiple colonies in Victoria and South Australia from 2017 to 2020.
As well as in pups, the chemicals (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances - PFAS ) were detected in juvenile animals and in an adult male. There was also evidence of transfer of the chemicals from mothers to newborns. ....
