In March the world celebrated the International Women’s Day, calling for a more equal future and recognizing the contributions women are making around the world. To truly “leave no one behind”, it is important to recognize the realities women face around the world and how COVID-19 has affected them – including in conflict-affected areas. Gender inequalities from violence and discrimination to the gender pay gap and under-representation in decision-making are pervasive across all countries. However, research has shown a strong correlation between gender inequality and conflict risk. So how is this relevant to the private sector? Even in the most adverse of circumstances, there is always something the private sector can do to respect and advance the diverse issues related to gender. Private sector engagement in internal displacement – recommendations for policy makers

Heightened attention and action are needed to address the global internal displacement crisis. As the private sector can play an indispensable role in supporting forcibly displaced people, it is important to unpack how their contributions can be leveraged and maximized. Following consultations with the CBi Member Networks, here are some ideas how the Connecting Business initiative encourages policy makers to approach private sector engagement.
First, policy makers should not overlook the role of the local private sector. It is these businesses often micro, small and medium in size who are among the first responders when a shock forces people to flee their homes. In 2020, in addition to fighting COVID-19, 9 CBi Member Networks responded to a total of 19 crises. These ranged from Tropical Cyclone Harold in Vanuatu to a drought in Madagascar, flooding in Mexico and volcanic ....

Crisis response and recovery
A category 5 cyclone struck Vanuatu in April, making it the first country in the world to respond to a major cyclone while its borders were closed. The local CBi network, the Vanuatu Business Resilience Council (VBRC) helped supply over 1,000 remote coastal households with 35 tonnes of food and NFIs over eight weeks, working with private-sector partners, NGOs and the UN to support the government.
