Syracuse Teachers Association President Bill Scott passed away suddenly this weekend.
Scott, 53, became STA president in 2019, guiding the Syracuse City School District through the COVID-19 pandemic. Before that he served as the fourth vice president of the association beginning in 2014.
In a letter to members, the STA Executive Board described Scott as an advocate who brought a unique humanist approach to his work.
President of New York State United Teachers, Andy Pallotta, commented on the loss, staying:

Syracuse, N.Y. A day after Onondaga County threw open the doors for school districts to bring more kids back into their classrooms, many school districts said they are already planning students’ return to a more normal schedule.
“We are working to make this change take effect as quickly as possible,” Fayetteville-Manlius Superintendent Craig Tice said in a statement. “We have been planning for this shift as our goal has always been to return students to the classroom full time.” ....
