NEW pontoons have been installed in Mordialloc in a bid to make boating better and more accessible.
Work was completed this month to install an accessible pontoon at Pier Road. Its main features will be wider gangways, intermediate landings, grab rails, and tactile surfaces.
Work has also been completed on the installation of new floating pontoons at the Governor Road boat ramp. The new pontoons are longer than the existing ones to allow for more capacity.
An update on the Better Boating Victoria website reads that it is also “working with the City of Kingston to upgrade the Governor Road boat ramp carpark to increase boat and trailer parking capacity.” ....

DOUBTS have been raised that works will not be finished at Hastings boat ramp in time for the September-November snapper season.
It appears there are no timelines or work schedules for dredging and pontoon works at ramp which is the busiest on Western Port.
The ramp was unavailable last year after rescue works on the collapsed “coffer dam” delayed its opening until late November (“Wall collapse leaves fishers high and dry”
The tender for dredging closed 31 March and the tender for the pontoon work closed 19 May.
Mornington Peninsula Shire’s infrastructure projects manager Derek Rotter said a contractor for the project had been appointed but would not elaborate on when the works would begin or end. ....

Launching and retrieving boats on Phillip Island is about to get easier and safer, thanks to the Andrews Labor Government’s project to revitalise boating facilities at Rhyll.
As part of the Labor Government’s $47.2 million investment to make recreational boating better in Victoria, the popular ramp at Rhyll will see a $4.5 million upgrade – giving boaters better access to Western Port and offshore fishing in Bass Strait.
The existing boat ramp will be replaced with a three-lane ramp extending deeper into the bay, allowing for all-tide operation and making it easier to launch and retrieve vessels.
The upgrade will include the construction of two new jetties and new pontoons, further increasing the ramp’s capacity. Car parking will also be upgraded to improve traffic flow and include dedicated boat preparation areas so boaters can attach tie-down straps and motor brackets out of the way. ....

Work will soon commence on a number of projects to improve accessibility in Mordialloc, as part of Council’s commitment to ensure our facilities, open spaces, buildings and foreshore can be enjoyed by everyone.
Council will install a Changing Places Accessible Toilet at Peter Scullin Reserve and has approved Better Boating Victoria’s plans to build a floating pontoon in Mordialloc Creek and a proposal to upgrade the boating gangways and pontoons at George Woods Reserve.
Kingston Mayor Steve Staikos said Council is committed to improving accessibility across Kingston and these important projects will ensure everyone can access and enjoy the Mordialloc foreshore and recreational boating on the beautiful Port Phillip Bay. ....
