Assam: Solar storages for Covid-19 vaccines to be tested during polio drive on January 31 | Guwahati News

GUWAHATI: The efficiency of solar vaccine storages for preserving Covid vaccines in the most inaccessible locations of Assam will be tested during the nationwide polio vaccination drive on January 31.
Of the 32 solar vaccine stores that have been developed in the hilly terrain and chars (sand bars) in the riverine areas of the state, 25 have been installed in 2019-20. The Centre has approved another four solar cold storages for Assam.
Health officials said before the Covid vaccination drive is rolled out for the masses with procurement of vaccine doses in large amounts in the days to come, the efficacy of these solar stores is going to be crucial for carrying out the Covid vaccination in these inaccessible locations. ....

Assam: 1,000 doses of Covid vaccine get frozen, wasted; officials blame refrigerators

GUWAHATI: Assam’s health department has sought an explanation from the authorities concerned after 1,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines got frozen and wasted at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital in Cachar district.
The southern Assam district requires 98 doses a day and it had received 1,000 doses, ahead of the nationwide vaccination drive that began on January 16. It was learned the entire consignment got frozen within hours after it was stored at the hospital.
The vaccines, apparently taken from Guwahati, were allegedly kept way below the prescribed temperature level. Some officials in Cachar, who refused to speak on the record, blamed refrigerators. ....

SILCHAR/GUWAHATI: A total of 1,000 doses (100 vials) of Covishield vaccine have got spoiled at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) in Assam’s Cachar district as they were stored at sub-zero temperatures.
The incident, which was reported to the health department in the morning of January 16, came to light only late on Monday night.
Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said probably due to lack of training, the officials concerned could not store the vaccines properly. He added that a team of senior health officials will go to Silchar to review the lapses. The state health department has asked the state cold chain officer to probe into the matter. ....

Authorities in Assam are probing how the 1,000 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine Covishield were found frozen in the vaccine store of the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), officials said on Tuesday.
Cachar Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli and state National Health Mission Director Lakshmanan S have separately ordered probes to identify the reason for the 100 vials of Covishield, containing 1,000 doses, being frozen .
Health officials in Guwahati, however, are not labelling the 100 vials or the 1,000 doses a waste yet as they would get them tested in a laboratory to test the efficacy of the vaccine. According to SMCH officials, the development was noticed on Saturday, the first day of the nationwide vaccination drive.
