Malaysian Oversight Body to Question UMNO Chief in Navy Ship-Building Probe

A parliamentary committee here announced this week it would summon ex-defense minister and UMNO party President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and other officials for questioning into why a Malaysian firm failed to deliver on time on a multi-billion-ringgit contract for building combat ships.
The Public Accounts Committee opened an investigation last month into the RM 9 billion (U.S. $2.2 billion) contract awarded to Boustead Naval Shipyard (BNS) Sdn Bhd in 2014 for the construction of six littoral combat ships. But not a single ship has been finished.
So far, eight people have testified before the committee.
PAC “will continue with its proceedings related to the littoral combat ships in early January 2021, by calling in next witnesses such as former Defense Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, former Navy Chief Abdul Aziz Jaafar, and the representative from the main contractor of the LCS project,” committee chairman Wong Kah W ....

According to information published by the Malaysian Navy on December 16, 2020, the construction phase of the fourth Littoral Mission Ship (LMS) for the Malaysian Navy was completed and launched into the water at the Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group Ltd Shipyard, Wuhan, China to undergo port acceptance test phase.

After acceptance tests, it is planned that the fourth LMS will be handed over to the Royal Malaysia Navy in November 2021 and will join the 11th LMS Squadron with KD Keris (First LMS), Sundang (Second LMS), and the third LMS that has yet to be named ....

The fourth and final Littoral Mission Ship (LMS) for the Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM or RMN) was launched today at the Wuchang Shipbuilding Industrial Group, in Wuhan, China.

According to an RMN statement, the next phase will be Port Acceptance Test Phase. However, following the worldwide outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic epidemic, the official naming ceremony of this Third LMS was postponed and will be held simultaneously with the ship’s official delivery ceremony scheduled for November 2021.
This final LMS will join the 11th LMS Squadron with KD ....
