ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) supremo Nawaz Sharif has called for checking the rigging in polls as electoral reforms will not work if the issue has not been resolved. In a Tweet on Monday, he said: “The issue is not of electoral reforms, but respect to vote. Everyone knows who are the embezzlers and plunderers of public mandate and vote sanctity. If this issue is not addressed, the Electronic Voting Machines will have the fate of the RTS [Result Transmission System]. ISLAMABAD: To ensure fairness and transparency in elections, the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) government on Monday unveiled an electoral reforms agenda envisaging a series of amendments to the Constitution and election laws.
The proposed amendments include introduction of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and right to franchise to overseas Pakistanis and also permission to contest elections as well as identifiable ballot for Senate elections.
Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhary Fawad Hussain and Adviser to Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs Dr Babar Awan shared details of the reforms agenda at a news conference, here on Monday. ....

Islamabad:Brining reforms about pensions is an urgent need to ensure sustainable fiscal growth at the federal as well as at provincial levels.
Speakers said this while sharing their views with the participants during an online dialogue on “Reform of pensions: lessons from successful examples in Pakistan” organised by Sustainable Development Policy Institute in collaboration with Sustainable Energy and Economic Development (SEED).
The former head of Federal Pay and Pension Commission, Wajid Rana said that any pension reforms cannot be separated from pay reforms. Both pay and pension bills are growing at a rapid pace and more is being consumed from the general revenue collections due to this increase, he added. ....

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari addressing a press conference on Monday, May 3, at the Bilawal House in Karachi.
KARACHI: PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Monday said that the PPP has always been an advocate of electoral reforms, adding that the party is ready for such reforms.
In a bid to stop rigging in elections, it is necessary to introduce legislation, said Bilawal while addressing a press conference at the Bilawal House in Karachi.
The PPP chairman also said that if PML-N has solid proof of rigging in NA-249 by-polls, then it should contact the Election Commission of Pakistan, ....

In a country where Form 45 has almost become a political term; where the counting of less than 100,000 votes can take hours; and where not a single election has been untainted by accusations of the euphemistically termed ‘foul play’, it is odd that the ‘electoral reforms’ buzzword has been bandied about but not really been taken up seriously. It has been obvious for some time that Pakistan’s crumbling electoral system is in need of reform. In fact, over the past decades, almost all political parties have talked about electoral reform as the essential ingredient to make the electoral system more representative and fair. Unfortunately, little has been done other than the occasional bouts of hand-wringing over the need for such reforms.
