Sarah Lister from Settle Graveyard Project has unearthed a fascinating graveyard tale linking MP Walter Morrison. Here is what she has found. Sarah has been working with the Folly in Settle and Malhamdale Local History Group as part of the Walter Morrison Festival commemorating 100 years since his death. Walter Morrison was one of the good guys, a local MP and philanthropist who lived at Malham Tarn House. Amongst many other things he paid for the construction of Giggleswick School Chapel. This tale is about the incredible Winskill family. From the 1840s John Winskill advertised his business in Settle as a builder, stonemason and grave stone cutter. He was immensely successful becoming one of the largest employers in Settle and providing jobs for 72 masons, labourers and apprentices.
New school board member elected
Ruthie McKenzie holds on to parks board seat after facing challenger Joe Becker
Local voters determined who would serve on multiple special district boards in Crook County during last Tuesday s election.
Most candidates ran unopposed, although two people were vying for a single spot on the Crook County Parks and Recreation District Board. Joe Becker was running against incumbent Ruthie McKenzie, who ended up winning another term with 52.89% of the vote. Other incumbents retaining their seats on the parks district board included Darlene Henderson and Barbara Punch.
Two incumbents, Scott Cooper and Gwen Carr, won another term on the Crook County School Board, but the board will gain one new member. Jessica Ritter ran unopposed to fill a vacancy left when Walt Wagner resigned from his position in March.

A measure to create a special law enforcement district in the Mohawk Valley looks too close to call as of Tuesday night with 51% against it and 48% in favor.
And a bond for the McKenzie School District looks to be in question with 57% voting no.

Three separate ballot measures (10-181, 10-182, and 10-183) will do just that, according to David Campos, officer manager for the Roberts Creek Water District. He told KLCC that the Green Sanitary District and his would be replaced by the Green Area Water and Sanitary Authority if voters approve the measures.
“There could be scenarios where authority measure passes, but dissolution of the districts does not, explained Campos. In which case the authority can still assume the operations of the districts, and the districts would continue to exist basically in name only. Like a shell entity. So the authority would handle administration of the billing of the water and sewer services.”
