The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) yesterday dismissed reports that the government is planning to replace the third liquified natural gas (LNG) terminal project in Taoyuan with an LNG terminal in Yunlin County’s Mailiao Township (麥寮).
The Chinese-language United Daily News yesterday cited “senior MOEA staff” as saying that President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) had asked Formosa Plastics Group (FPG, 台塑集團) chairman William Wong (王文淵) if the construction of an LNG terminal in Mailiao could be sped up. ....

Taipei, March 11 (CNA) Kuomintang (KMT) legislators on Thursday urged the government to halt all construction on a controversial liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal project, after a petition supporting a nationwide referendum on the project recorded enough signatures, pending ratification, to go ahead in August.
At a press conference, members of the KMT, Taiwan s main opposition party, said that construction on the project should be stopped immediately, to prevent the algal reef in the area being further harmed.
The KMT legislators also demanded that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government actively prepare alternative solutions, and called on President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) and Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) to publicly state they will respect the result of the referendum. ....

Legislators call for legal amendment on gender equality

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmakers Hung Sun-han (洪申翰) and Fan Yun (范雲) yesterday urged the Ministry of Labor to review gender equality laws to protect workers, following a sexual harassment scandal at a chocolate company.
At a news conference at the Legislative Yuan in Taipei, the lawmakers called for amending the Gender Equality in Employment Act (性別工作平等法).
The amendment highlights a case in which former Fu Wan Chocolate president Hsu Feng-chia (許峰嘉) in 2015 was sentenced to six months in prison, which was commuted to a fine.
