Tourism Operators in Victoria Want More Flights in Federal Rescue Package

Victoria’s tourism operators are requesting the federal government add four more regional airports, including Tullamarine, to the $1.2 billion federal tourism rescue package.
In a co-signed letter to federal Tourism Minister Dan Tehan, the operators said they are “deeply disappointed” with the fact that Avalon remains the only Victorian airport in the rescue package so far and calls on the federal governments to add Tullamarine, Albury, Bendigo, and Mildura airports to the package.
“The vast majority of regional Victoria missed out and disproportionately compared with regional areas in other parts of the country,” the tourism operators said. ....

Focus on South Island tourism and regional economies

South Island regions hardest hit by the closure of international borders are the focus of a visit by Tourism and Regional Development Minister Stuart Nash over the next two days.
Mr Nash will visit Southland and Central Otago to discuss challenges facing regional economies. He will travel to Te Anau, Invercargill, Queenstown, Arrowtown and Cromwell.
“I would like to hear first-hand from local mayors and councillors, small businesses, employers, community organisations and iwi about how they are responding to the impact of closed borders,” Mr Nash said.
“I also would like updates on the roll out of tourism support and infrastructure investment from the Tourism Recovery Package, Provincial Growth Fund and other sources. ....

Nash to be quizzed on trans-Tasman plan during southern visit

Fiordland tourism sector faces operator exodus in second year of no international visitors


According to the Department of Conservation, visitor numbers to Milford Sound in September and October 2020 had dropped 72 per cent from the year before.
As the “gateway to Milford”, the Fiordland tourism sector had traditionally relied heavily on international tourists and while Kiwis had answered the call to back their backyards, there simply weren’t enough to fill the void.
Now that summer was drawing to a close and Kiwis were going back to work, the situation was dire, Adams said.
“Te Anau has fallen off the cliff in the last week,” he said.
While some businesses were operating at 20 to 60 per cent less than usual over Christmas, Adams said that had dropped to an 85 to 90 per cent drop in revenue in the past week. ....
