JAMMU, May 18: Veteran BJP leader and former Union Minister, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta died after a prolonged illness at his Gandhi Nagar residence here today, days after undergoing successful treatment for COVID-19 at Narayana Hospital Katra, his family said.
Gupta (87) is survived by his two sons and a daughter.
“He had tested positive for COVID-19 on May 5 and returned from Narayana Hospital on Sunday after successful treatment. His condition suddenly deteriorated in the wee hours and he breathed his last around 5.10 am,” his elder son, Anil Gupta said. ....

As many as 581 people tested positive for COVID-19 in Palakkad district on Monday.
When 226 of them contracted the virus through direct contact with infected persons, there were 339 cases whose source of origin could not be identified. There were 165 recoveries in the district on Monday.
District Collector Mrunmai Joshi directed 11 empanelled private hospitals in the district to set aside 10% of their ICU beds with oxygen facility for COVID-19 treatment. Hospitals having more than 50 beds have been empanelled under the State government’s Karunya Health Insurance scheme. ....

KOZHIKODE: For a newly graduated young doctor from an affluent family in Nagpur, the backward village of Muttil in Wayanad district –– inhabited mostly by marginal farmers and poor tribals –– was an unlikely place to start a career.
