Young minds meet to spearhead community issues

Sunshine Coast Council’s very first Youth Council has been formed with the diverse group’s inaugural meeting kicking off this month (23 June) at Bokarina.
Fifteen members make up the Youth Council and come from many areas of the region, including Caloundra, Maroochydore, Buderim, Mapleton and Marcoola, while representing diverse interests such as mental health, human rights, justice and the environment.
Sunshine Coast Council Community Portfolio Councillor David Law said he was proud to see strong interest in the two-year program.
“The purpose of the Youth Council is to educate participants about local government and, importantly, provide an opportunity for its members to advocate for projects and issues that are meaningful for our region,” Cr Law said. ....

Maleny show must go on after COVID break

The Maleny show is set to return in May with children and those young at heart expected to flock to the Hinterland’s best agriculture and entertainment display.
The two-day show, to go from May 28-29, will include monster trucks, fireworks, showbags, carnival games, horse and cattle events, cooking competitions and, of course, dagwood dogs covered in sauce.
After having to cancel the event in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Maleny Show Society secretary Lois White said the committee had been working non-stop since February to make this year’s show a reality. ....

Sunshine Coast community unites at DV march and vigil

More than 300 people gathered last night (5 May) to pay their respects and show their support to victims of domestic and family violence in a moving candlelight vigil and community march at Maroochydore.
It comes as Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month (May) is now well underway, a state-wide initiative encouraging communities across Queensland to stand as one and send a clear message that domestic and family violence in families and homes will not be tolerated.
Sunshine Coast Council Community Portfolio Councillor David Law said the Let’s Grow Together event, hosted in partnership with Sunshine Coast Council and Centacare, was well attended and not only helped spread awareness of the important issue, it also shone the spotlight on support services available. ....

First Nations Forum set for March - tickets now available

A community forum bringing together the voices of First Nations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) people with a strong focus on fostering relationships, representation and future wellbeing will be a first for the Sunshine Coast and be held at Novotel Twin Waters on Monday 22 March.
Sunshine Coast Council is facilitating the event with a forum and dinner, titled First Nations Self-Determination, Representation and Wellbeing, and guest speakers include Kabi Kabi and Jinibara Traditional Custodians, UQ Adjunct Associate Professor and Kombumerri person Dr Mary Graham and Statement from the Heart Working Group First Nations Chair Suzanne Thompson.
Ms Thompson said the release of the Uluru Statement from the Heart in 2017 was a defining moment in Australia that had a profound effect. ....
