Over exploitation of Dakua because of the high quality timber the trees provide puts the species under the threat of extinction.
Permenant Secretary for Environment Joshua Wycliffe said Dakua s value makes it the most sorted tree species and the spread of dieback disease has led to the reclassification of kauri, one of the world’s largest and longest-living tree species.
He said more plant species are now under threat from diseases, cows, goats and other animals, and changes in land use.
He in an interview said 1100 plants are now classified as threatened, since the last conservation assessment.
