Unions Reject Land Credit and Mortgage Proposals; Talks to Continue Thursday
Today marks the eleventh day that the Belize National Teachers Union has been on strike, matching the record set in 2016. The Joint Unions Negotiating Team and government representatives are scheduled to meet on Thursday and reports are that a decision on strike actions will not be taken until Friday. So where do the discussions stand currently? And, how possible is it that strike actions will conclude by weekend? Union leaders were on Open Your Eyes Morning Show today. “I certainly feel that way. I am certainly proud of all the members that came out, all the unions that came out, to fight for what they deserve. We are not fighting for something we want, it is what we deserve. We have always continued working. We have not stopped working. In fact, we have been working overtime and not getting paid overtime. So for the government to want to come and cut the ten percent it is really unfair. And so I guess this is what is shows out here that it is not only myself, but when I speak, I speak on behalf of my membership.” ....

In more from the B.N.T.U. protest today, some in the union are pushing for a boycott of certain media houses. According to President of the Union, Senator Elena Smith, this is in response to the airing of certain anti-union government ads. But, the union is reportedly being specific in the media houses they are targeting. In essence, Senator Smith says the union will be pulling back support from those media houses intent on ridiculing its members.

“If it is that these media house are putting out these ads that goes against us as Unions then do you expect that we will support them? Of course not. We cannot support them when they are going against us. They need us as much as we need them. They want to make money and they are making money off these ads. But are you going to sell your soul to the devil just for some money? That is not how it is going to work.” ....
